Julia Marion’s love for the bassoon began when she was twelve years old in Madison, Wisconsin, where she grew up in a three-generation home filled with the sound of her grandfather’s daily piano practice. During her bachelor studies on modern bassoon, she discovered her passion for historical bassoons and moved to Basel, Switzerland to complete a master’s degree in historical performance practice at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Since completing her studies, Julia has built an international performance career. She is invited to play with internationally-recognized ensembles in Europe and the USA, including Kammerorchester Basel (Switzerland), Freiburg Baroque Orchestra (Germany), Dunedin Consort (U.K.), and the American ensembles Third Coast Baroque and the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra. She performs regularly with the ensemble le buisson prospérant in Zürich. She can also be heard in recordings with the Dunedin Consort and the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra. Julia holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA) where she studied modern and baroque bassoons with Prof. Marc Vallon. She also holds a Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School in New York where she studied with Prof. Dominic Teresi. In Europe, she completed post-graduate studies with Prof. Donna Agrell in Basel and Prof. Alberto Grazzi in Milan. She has lived in the border region where Germany, France, and Switzerland meet since 2011.
